The Beginning
April 5th

The anticipation of the M&M3's is taking a hold of everything. We took a trip this weekend to Tyler, Texas, to celebrate my birthday and Ginger Perrone's birthday. Of course, McKenna and Merlot went with me and Joe, I couldn't leave them at home with McKenna so close to having her babies. On the way to Tyler, Merlot kept fighting Joe for the middle seat, after Joe took a nap in it and came back up front, Merlot took it over for the rest of the trip to Tyler.

Merlot and McKenna got to play and run with Ginger's gang. Then on Saturday evening, McKenna got that one step closer to whelping her litter and Merlot took a stance and kept Sir Michael away from McKenna. I finally had to put Merlot up. Nothing had happened yet, but I was not taking any chances. Sunday saw the four of us heading back to the house with Ginger sighing a sigh of relief -- No puppies had come while at her house. After a short nap, McKenna decided that Merlot's seat looked quite inviting - so, she stared Merlot out of the seat and tried it out for herself.

And she did not give up that seat the whole way home. Got home and after being home a while I took her temp and it had dropped a degree. She ate a great dinner though. Later last night she began to have other signs that the birthing process was nearing, so I set my alarm to wake me every two hours in case she didn't, so I could check on her.

In between the alarms, she woke me up so that means I was awake every hour nearly on the hour last night. Boy, am I tired today -- no puppies yet. Table is all set up, ice cream and other nutritional supplies for McKenna have been stocked in the refrigerator and freezer. I even gave her an energy shake, which I normally save until she starts having those pups, that and a couple of dog biscuits is all that she has eaten today. She is currently stretched out and sleeping on the tile floor in the dining room. Merlot is sacked out in front of the whelping box; little Mindy (our lab mix) is asleep on the couch next to the whelping box and here I sit. I told Mindy to enjoy her perch while she can, because soon this would be McKenna's room again and that "mom spot" would have to be turned back over to me and McKenna. More later as things start happening.

April 6th

Well, so far no puppies. McKenna did not eat this a.m. and is sleeping. I guess she is getting ready for the hours of being awake that are to come. I have a friend that is going to come over this a.m. and sit with McKenna until it is time for her to go to classes. She will call me when she leaves so I know when to go home and check on McKenna. Oh, and of course, she will call me if McKenna starts having contractions. Last time it was almost three hours from the first contraction to the first puppy being born.

10:30pm: No puppies yet. However, McKenna has rearranged the bedding in her whelping box, has been panting most of the night and is now catching some actual shut-eye. She has been very uncomfortable and whiny all evening.

I just don't know whether to try to get some sleep or not. I should probably just crawl into the whelping box with her and snuggle. I need to go see if I can find another alarm clock and put it in here and sleep on the couch. My poor Kenna.

Now if I can just get Mindy to vacate the "mom's spot" so that this mom can stretch out and try to catch a few winks. . .LOL

April 7th

7:14pm: We (I mean McKenna) just had her first contraction .So looks like tonite is going to be the night. Woohoo!

11:47pm: We have our first M&M3 -- announcing Ms. Lilac, born at 11:47 p.m.

April 8th

03:00am: Our next pup was born at 0300 and within minutes he had found a milk faucet that he thought was made just for him. Haven't decided on a color collar for him yet.

03:48am: Ms. Purple. . joined us at 0348 this a.m. She joins her sister, Lilac and her brother, Royal Blue "Royal". Ms. Purple weighed in at 4 kg or about 3/4 of a pound.

04:45am: We have another boy weighing in at 3/4 of a pound, he will be wearing the lt. blue collar and going by the name "LT"

05:10am: Majestic's Miss JustPeachyKeen had come into the world at 0510. She weighs 1 lb. and will be wearing the Peach colored collar.

1:00pm: The M&M 3 litter is complete and consists of 3 females (purple, lilac and peachykeen) and 2 males (Royal Blue and Lt. Blue). Mother and children appear to be doing well. It seems that most may be duals, however, I for sure see one sable in the bunch. I may get to see more once I have had a chance to get some sleep.

April 9th

Socialization begins early here. This is a very familiar scene as Joe spends a lot of his time in the whelping box. He likes being near the puppies and McKenna.

"Well, we are one day old now. We are sleeping more and when we are awake we are scooting around more. We are not as afraid as we were yesterday so we are not crying as much today. We can smell mom and make our way to her without too very much difficulty. We like mom's bear. It smells like her and is very soft. Gramma took our pictures today with some other stuffed toy. It wasn't mom and it wasn't mom's bear so we were not happy about being there. So Gramma says these may not be the best pictures in the world. "

Well, Lilac is now 24 hours old and The others are close behind. Everything is quiet. I am about to get comfortable in the "Mom's Spot" on the couch next to the whelping box. We would all like to say "nite, nite" and thank you all for being with us during the last few days. From all of us in the whelping area. Good Night

April 10th

"We are scooting around more today and every time Gramma looks around some of us are eating. . . The rest of us are sleeping. Joe spent a lot of time in the whelping box with us. In fact, he fell asleep in there with us. Purple Girl snuggled up to Joe and slept with him until she got hungry and had to go find mom. Then while Joe was still sleeping, Royal decided it was his turn to snuggle.

We have all gained at least 1/4 - 1/2 lb. as of yesterday when we were two days old."

April 11th

"Gramma has been absolutely amazed at how much we grew overnight!! She couldn't believe it! Joe spent some more quality sleep time with us. LT got to snuggle today.

We are really eating lots and lots today. We are making angry yips and still doing some frustrated crying as we try to find mom and our milk. Then this evening Gramma picked us up and put us on something that felt very funny. It was light and tickly stuff and it had a hard edge around it so we couldn't go very far -- We heard her say something about Easter."

April 13th

"We are 6 days old today - Wow! We are getting nosier and louder. We are scooting around with ease and can key in on Mom in a flash. Our eyes are not open yet, but that doesn't seem to bother us too much. We are getting more confident of ourselves and our surroundings. We don't sleep all huddled together any more. We just sprawl out anywhere and everywhere.

Purple snuggled up to a pillow and actually used the pillow for her head until Lilac came along and pushed her out of the way. Then Lilac crawled inside the pillowcase and it took some crying, but eventually was able to turn around and come back out. Gramma was standing by to make sure Lilac was able to handle the situation. Joe got his blankets and tried to sleep with us again tonite, but we were really noisy and active and finally Gramma told Joe to get out of our box and go to bed. He didn't go very far - he is asleep on the couch next to our box. Joe really likes us and we like him.

We think by tomorrow all of us will be over 2 lbs. Not bad for only one week.Purple girl is the only one not at two pounds yet, but she is at 1.9 lbs. Royal is 2.6 pounds already. Gramma, I think is kinda considering keeping Royal, but says it is too early to make a firm decision. Gramma had better hurry up and find a place in the country for us. . . We are running out of room here. We had better pretend we are already sleeping. Nite, nite."
